sibling preparation
The Childbirth Resource Room developed an hour-and-a-half-long class to prepare children, ages 3 - 8, for the birth of a new family member. The information and activities in this class include a mix of age-appropriate lecture, stories and play and are prepared to create a positive and encouraging environment for children and parents.
The Sibling Preparation class includes...
- changes in a growing family
- role play with a “baby” to mimic interacting with a new baby
- what a baby needs
- what babies can and can't do
- how older siblings can help
- tips for parents on getting through the adjustment period
- labor and birth education for children whose parents are including them in the birth
Parents whose children are not attending the birth can leave early if they are not comfortable with the birth education segment of the class.
